Results

Original question:

The Polling Booth has the possibility to show polling results in real time, while the voting is going on.

This provides a measure of operational transparency, allowing a voter to check results before and after her vote to make sure that her vote has been counted.

On the other hand it allows a voter to take a cue from the results which leads to a possibly undesirable feedback effect.

Would you be in favor of showing results during voting or only after the voting has closed?

Or would it depend on the topic?

Should the Booth show results during the voting?

Total number of voters: 148
Vote Number of Votes Percentage
my preference would depend on the topic 18 12.1622%
show results after the vote closes 80 54.0541%
show results during the vote 50 33.7838%

Comments:
  • While the feedback process is open to abuse, that would be largely self-correcting. Overall I think the transparency and extra information is desirable.
  • I think the feedback factor does not outweigh the transparency
  • I don't see any value in showing partial results. What value is there in doing so? Certainly one would not want to see subsequent voters influenced by voting trends.
  • Real-time results should only be available to those who have already cast a vote. Upon the conclusion of the election a results/stats should be openly available.
  • leads to desirable feedback, when question poorly understood
  • Some of the comments make good (succinct!!) points, more efficiently than expecting people to wade through long discussions on a web-based forum.
  • no -- maybe show a vote count at the most, but no. not more.
  • i would like to see the result immediately after i vote, not before
  • From a theoretical perspective voting with result shown during the vote can led to manipulation. The election process has to be secret.
  • As a Canadian, I know how showing results during the vote introduces bias and 'strategic voting', both of which are unfair to those who voted early.
  • It's absurd to show results before the polls close if the purpose is an election or binding vote. Since this system allows for instant confirmation that the vote has been cast, why not leave it at that?
  • showing results AFTER closing will be the most 'correctest' elections/votings
  • I don't see value in knowing how a vote is evolving during the process. Members should vote based upon their conviction which does not require any view of voting trends.
  • If I didn't have an opinion before voting, I should not vote anyway
  • no other option insures integrity in the voting process.
  • The best scenario would be to show the partial (updated) results only to those have already voted
  • Real Time Results plus enable capability for early voters to change their vote
