Original question:
Q3: Should a copy of our membership list once again be given to Karl Auerbach for safekeeping
YES? NO? Define safekeeping
Comment by Judyth Mermelstein:
No problem with this as it stands...except that it doesn't make it clear whether this is meant to be a pure 'custodian of a backup' role or something more (in which case we should ask him whether he's willing before asking the membership to let him) and whether it applies only to the current list (which Jan and I have) or to periodic updates (to be sent by whom?) and/or FTP access by Karl to pick up the changes himself without an IAL.org intermediary.

- If Karl agrees, he should be the holder of the list and act only as a backup provider.
- Safekeeping should include the right to determine how the list can be utilized for the benefit of the membership or the organization.
- It's not a problem. The custodial responsibility should be limited to sole safekeeping. The membership list should not be used for any purpose unless voted for approval by all members.
- Can't you put a syncronized copy on 5 servers around the globe that you only have access to by password and username for the 3 of you????
- to be decided by the panel
- anyone having access to this list shall be bound to a set of rules indicating what the purpose and allowed usage of the data is.
- I have no problem forwarding the list to Karl.
- But we should certainly ask him first whether he'll do it and what he'd be willing to do!
- If 2 people already have a copy, why is a third still necessary? For security/privacy reasons, the less people with access to it, the better.
- There may be legal issues without getting a release from each and every individual - the EU privacy acts for instance would mandate this I beleive and it is not possible for an individual to know that going into the picture.
- yes for safekeeping as off site storage only (encrypted?)
- Safekeeping = Backup. Prefer more professional method, with multiple locations providing backup & recovery.
